José S. Suquet
Chairman of the Board, President and CEO
Mr. Jose Suquet is chairman of the board, president and CEO of Pan-American Life Insurance Group Inc. New Orleans-based Pan-American Life has been a leading international insurance company for more than 95 years.
In November 2004, Mr. Suquet was appointed president and CEO of Pan-American Life, succeeding the retiring John J. Kelly as chairman of the board in January 2008. Shortly after joining the company, he led Pan-American Life through the devastation and survival of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, directing an emergency recovery plan that streamlined the company's operations and staff, eliminated unproductive agencies, outsourced critical services and divested noncore businesses. In 2006, Mr. Suquet engineered the company's conversion from a mutual to a mutual holding company and completed the sale of the company's headquarters building. Additionally, he has also developed a detailed strategic plan aimed at increasing penetration in the U.S. Hispanic market to build the bridge of the Americas and expand Pan-American Life's long term presence in Latin America.
In 2007, when the company achieved record statutory revenues and statutory operating income, which increased its total capital to an all-time high, A.M. Best affirmed the company's excellent "Financial Strength Rating" and revised its outlook to positive from stable.
Previously, Mr. Suquet held senior management posts in the insurance industry for more than two decades, including serving as senior executive vice president and chief distribution officer of AXA Financial. During his six-year tenure at corporate headquarters, sales increased from $5.5 billion to more than $13 billion.
Mr. Suquet has long been involved in professional and industry associations, and is past chairman of LIMRA International and a former member of the board of trustees of the American College. While living in New York, Mr. Suquet served as a director of the Greater New York YMCA and as a trustee of the Browning School. During his time in South Florida, Mr. Suquet was prominent in Miami civic and business affairs, including as chairman-elect of the Beacon Council, as a trustee of Florida International University Foundation and a trustee of Baptist Hospital Foundation. Additionally, while in South Florida, his general agency – The Suquet Agency – was among the sales and marketing leaders of The Equitable. Under his management, The Suquet Agency was awarded Equitable President's Trophy for eight consecutive years.
Mr. Suquet presently serves on the board of trustees of the United Way of the Greater New Orleans Area and is the chairman of the United Way campaign for 2008. He is a board member of the Ochsner Health System and its audit and oversight committee. And, in late 2008 he was named to the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.
Mr. Suquet was born in Cuba and is considered one of the most successful Hispanic business leaders in America. He graduated from Fordham University (New York) with a Bachelor of Science and holds an M.B.A. from the University of Miami.
Eugenio Magdalena
Executive Vice President-International
Mr. Magdalena, oversees all of Pan-American Life's businesses in Latin America, including the International Dollar, Bancassurance and Product Development divisions. He is responsible for driving growth in the corporation through the design and implementation of effective product development, organization and people strategies.
Born in Spain, Mr. Magdalena has more than 22 years of experience managing Life, Accident and Health insurance operations in Latin America, the U.S. and Europe. Most recently, he served as the lead country executive in Spain for the Assurant Solutions Group.
During a career at CIGNA that spanned from 1986 to 2003, he held several senior management roles in Latin America, including assignments in the company's regional headquarters in Miami, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.
His last project with CIGNA was the creation of a new unit offering life, accident and health products through direct marketing, covering all of Central America and the Caribbean, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia via local fronting arrangements. As a result, Mr. Magdalena has thorough understanding of the Hispanic Market.
Mr. Magdalena earned a degree in economics at the Catholic University in Caracas, Venezuela, and a M.B.A at Cranfield School of Management in Cranfield, England.
Carlos F. Mickan
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Mr. Mickan oversees all financial operations and has more than 20 years of experience in Latin America and Asia markets and financial activities.
Prior to joining Pan-American, Mr. Mickan served as senior vice president and CFO of Principal International Inc., the International Division of Principal Financial Group, where he managed financial relationships and activities across Latin America and Asia.
Mr. Mickan was instrumental in Principal Financial’s transition from a mutual insurance company to a stock company while contributing his financial acumen to significantly improve performance in the firm's International Division.
As the leader of the international mergers and acquisitions program during his five years at Principal International, assets under management grew from $1 billion to $10 billion.
Before joining Principal in 1999, Mr. Mickan held positions with Aetna International as a country officer for Venezuela and chief planning officer for 12 international subsidiaries. Also, he also served as chief financial officer for Cigna Latin America and assistant treasurer for CIGNA Worldwide.
Mr. Mickan's international experience and exposure, and expertise in the Latin American markets are an integral part of Pan-American Life's strategy. Additionally, he has assisted in the development of numerous successful acquisitions and joint ventures in Latin America.
Born in Colombia, he is an alumnus of the Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia, with a bachelor’s degree of science in finance and received an M.B.A in international business from the University of South Carolina.
Patrick Fraizer
Senior Vice President of Human Resources and General Counsel
Mr. Fraizer brings to Pan-American’s senior executive team more than 20 years of legal, accounting, mergers/acquisitions experience in the financial services industry and specialization in joint ventures.
Prior to joining Pan-American Life, Mr. Fraizer served as vice president and senior international counsel for the Principal Financial Group with responsibility for the firm’s legal services outside of the United States. During his tenure at Principal, he also served as a general auditor and chief compliance officer for the Group and as general counsel for its international division.
Mr. Fraizer also worked as a tax specialist with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. He is a certified public accountant and a member of the American Bar Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Association of Life Insurance Counsel, the Iowa State Bar Association and the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree of business administration in accounting and a J.D. with distinction from the University of Iowa.
Felix Martinez
Senior Vice President and Regional President for International Dollar Sales
Mr. Martinez is responsible for developing our international markets and managing the international individual insurance and group international operations in countries where we have a corporate presence.
With more than 35 years of practice, his efforts are focused on gaining market share, developing distribution and contributing to corporate profits.
Mr. Martinez came to Pan-American Life in 1996 from John Hancock Life Insurance Company in Boston where he was director of agency development. His responsibilities as a director included the development of the independent agency distribution system for John Hancock for the domestic market.
Before working for John Hancock, Mr. Martinez spent 24 years with Confederation Life Insurance Company in Atlanta where he held numerous marketing responsibilities and positions, including director of agency management and international market development
Mr. Martinez earned a bachelor’s degree of arts in business administration from Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico.
Rodolfo J. “Rudy” Revuelta, CFA
Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer
Rodolfo J. “Rudy” Revuelta is responsible for the corporate and mortgage-backed securities portfolios of Pan-American's U.S. and Latin American branches and affiliates.
Mr. Revuelta began his professional career with Pan-American Life in 1976 as a Latin American securities analyst and was named vice president in 1993.
He is a member and past chairman of the Investment Committee of the United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area and past president of the Financial Analysts of New Orleans
Mr. Revuelta received a bachelor’s degree of science in business administration and M.B.A from the University of Florida. He earned his chartered financial analyst (CFA) designation in 1980 and is a member of the CFA Institute, formerly AIMR.
Gregg M. Schneider, FSA, MAAA, CFA
Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary
Mr. Schneider serves as senior vice president and chief actuary for Pan-American Life. With more than 25 years in experience as an actuary, he is responsible for product development and pricing, actuarial reserves and other financial reporting items, reinsurance administration, group and worksite, and corporate planning/project management.
From 1987 through the first half of 2002, Mr. Schneider was a consulting actuary with Deloitte & Touche where he was director of the Central U.S. life actuarial consulting practice.
Prior experience includes actuary positions with Sentry Insurance in Wisconsin and North Central Life of Minnesota, where he served as Vice President and Chief Actuary. His experience includes most areas of life, annuity, and health insurance, both from a pricing and financial reporting perspective.
Mr. Schneider received his fellowship of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) in 1979. He is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and also holds the chartered financial analyst (CFA) designation.
Karen Chauvin, FLMI, HIA
Chief Information Officer
As chief information officer, Mrs. Chauvin assumes responsibility for helping the company maintain the integrity of its records and systems and the flow of communications.
Mrs. Chauvin joined Pan-American Life in 1980 as a software developer in the Information Technology Department (IT). Mrs. Chauvin worked at various levels with the software development team from 1980 until 1989 when she was named as IT manager of the group health operations.
She has also served as the IT manager of the Data Warehousing and Emerging Technology group. Mrs. Chauvin was named as vice president of the Solution Services area within IT in 1999.
Mrs. Chauvin holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Louisiana State University. She is also a fellow of the Life Management Institute and a health insurance associate in the Health Insurance Association of America.
Marta Reeves
Vice President for Corporate Marketing
As vice president for corporate marketing, Marta Reeves leads Pan-American Life's marketing operations, maintaining and strengthening communications and sales-support to its network of domestic and international insurance agencies, agents, policyholders and the public.
Previously, Ms. Reeves worked at Principal International, a unit of Principal Financial Group, as director of direct marketing where she was responsible for strategic planning and development of corporate growth initiatives in Latin America, Asia and the U.S. Hispanic market.
Her prior insurance industry experience includes executive-level positions in international insurance marketing with CIGNA and Aetna throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
She has extensive experience in direct marketing, policyholder communication and loyalty programs, call center management and marketing support of distribution partners.
Born in the United States, Ms. Reeves grew up in the Dominican Republic, Panama, Venezuela and Argentina. Ms. Reeves earned her bachelor's degree of science in marketing from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, and holds an M.B.A in international business from the University of Miami.
