Central America Region Summary
As the gateway to the Americas, the Central American Region is home to a great number of Pan-American Life policyholders in Latin America. Pan-American Life is the main provider of both individual and group life and health insurance policies in the region that is comprised of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
Pan-American Life was launched in Central America in 1914, when the company selected a General Agency in Guatemala to do business in that country as well as throughout the Region.
In the following years, the general agency also began operations in Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador. In the mid-1900s, all Central American countries started to pass insurance laws. Pan-American Life adapted to these new laws, clearing the way for the changes that the countries were requiring. In every country, the general agencies were eventually converted into branches or subsidiaries/affiliates, ultimately becoming the companies that are currently doing business today in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
Among their achievements, Pan-American Life Insurance Company, Compañía de Seguros,S.A., Pan-American Life Honduras and Pan-American Life El Salvador are three of the strongest insurance companies in the region and leaders in individual life insurance. They were the first companies to offer individual and group health insurance.
Moreover, their investment departments manage one of the largest, most profitable portfolios of the insurance sector in each country. They were the first companies to offer mortgage loans, helping Central Americans to buy long-term housing.
Another significant accomplishment of Pan-American Life was being the first company in the region to offer individual life insurance policies in both local currency and U.S. dollars.
In the area of life insurance, we were also the first company to introduce and switch from whole life to universal life, which occurred in the mid-1980s.
We have invested in excellent locations in each country: Avenida Reforma in Guatemala City, Guatemala; Alameda Manuel Enrique Araujo in San Salvador, El Salvador; and in Honduras at Avenida República de Chile in Tegucigalpa and Boulevard Los Próceres in San Pedro Sula.
